This earthquake was felt widely across the northwest of Scotland. It is the largest earthquake in the region since a magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Oban on 29 September 1986 and, more recently, a magnitude 4.0 ML earthquake in Arran on 4 April 1999. Scotland's largest earthquake, a magnitude 5.2 ML event in Argyll in 1880, was 75 km to the southeast. This earthquake was followed by a magnitude 3.4 ML event two minutes later.
